To begin with we must define what we mean by electronic cigarette and they’re a battery-powered device that vaporizes nicotine. They’re more likely to be known as E- cigs. Most are designed to simulate a smoking implement like cigarettes, cigars or pens and pipes. They come in various flavors with nicotine levels and are referred as vaping rather than smoking. E-cigarettes keep secrets hidden to the public.
Electronic cigarettes may bring health risks because they have not been proven safe. Let me begin with the fact that A FDA analysis shows e-cigs can contain carcinogens, which is why they don’t guarantee it can give you cancer. The same analysis showed they contain chemicals that are found in antifreeze such as Diethylene Glycol. Mehmet Oz said, “ The vapors may also contain some potentially unsafe metals. The amount of nicotine that these cigarettes supply is unreliable, so consumers can’t be completely sure how much they are getting with each breath "(Mehmet 2013). Their industry only goes as far as to say they are less harmful and they’re better than a cigarette. Since E-cigs moved indoors researchers found out that their vapor causes respiratory distress and disease. In fact the University of California banned e-cigarettes because of what this research found out. The safety of Electronic cigarettes remains unknown for the public but they are still legal to sell and use.
Most people think E-cigs is a product that helps quit smoking, but is it and does it? A survey in July found that only 3% of users credited E-cigarettes for helping them quit smoking. “Studies suggest e-cigarettes may actually provide a gateway into nicotine or tobacco addition, which is why children an people who do not smoke should never use them.” (Mehmet Oz 2013) It is recommended not to use this to help quit smoking until it is proved they do help you. “The World Health Organization raises the concern of addiction from their use. A 2013 report by the CDC analyzing to 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), a survey including 24,658 US students, found that while electronic cigarette use among middle and high school students almost doubled from 2011 to 2012, use of certain tobacco products were shown to have fallen over the same period.” (Wikipedia 2013) Even though most people think E-cigs help quit smoking, this has not been proved; in fact it has been proved it increases the addiction.
E-cigs are cheaper than all cigarettes because they are not taxed like them. The first question we need to answer is why aren’t they taxed like cigarettes? And the answer is because the E-cigarettes are subject only to sales tax. On the other hand, regular cigarettes deal with taxes up to 50% of the retail price.According to Yahoo , some of the new laws being considered — bans on use in public places like restaurants and bars, and high sin taxes (yahoo 2013). "Ms.Herzog predicts that E-cigs will be taxed 5% next year, 10% by 2015 and 20% by 2019" (Ms. Herzog 2013).It is a fact that the reason why they’re supposed to is because there is no regulation ; but it believed that once regulation starts prices will go up.
E-cigarettes are advertised like its 1960 which are increasing posebility of them getting to the hands of kids. They are advertised in TV. something that in 1971 was banned for regular cigarettes but this is all consequence of having no regulation. "You wont see a surgeon General's warning on e-cig packages"(online wsj). They are promoted by celebrities causing kids to follow their idols and thoose who they admire. Also , they are getting to the hand of kids because you can buy them with out proof of age specially online. Studies have shown that the number of kids and middle school and high school has doubled from last year to this year."250 brands of e-cig sold in stores and online, an virtually no federal regulation"(online wsj). No regulation on cigarettes are giving them oppurtinity to be advertised like this, that contributes to get them in kids hands.
The FDA should regulnate e-cigs because they have not been prove safe. Would you like to buy something that is legal and hasn’t been proven safe? They are advertised as a tool to help quit smoking but they don’t. They hide the real reason of why they are cheaper. Would you like to buy something that lies about its benefits or simply hide stuff from you? An even better question from all the above Would you like to buy an E-cig?
